  • How do I decide what shingle to choose?

The choice of shingle is a personal one unless there are restrictive covenants in your area that make the choice for you. Often, storm damage leads to the homeowner asking this question. They don't just wake up and decide to change their roof. Usually, a big hail storm will have struck the Dallas Fort Worth area and now they are deciding what to choose, or perhaps a big storm has revealed leakage. The main concerns I see are:

    • Cost: for many people, this is of overriding importance to them. A three tab shingle will of course be the least expensive way to go, but will not have the curb appeal of a higher grade product.
    • Value: this is where other factors enter the equation. For most people, a shingle like the GAF Timberline will represent the best value with excellent long term wearability and good looks.
    • Color: "I saw a house that really had a great looking color on the roof; can you match it?" When I hear this, it usually means a homeowner saw a designer color roof that caught their eye.
    • Resale value: "I really do not want to spend much as I'm planning to sell soon." Look around at your neighbors' homes. If they have three tab roofs, it certainly will not make sense to put up a designer shingle in the neighborhood, and vice versa.
    • Insurance settlement: The insurance company will pay to restore your home to what it was. They will not pay for shingle upgrades.

Different Types Of Roof Systems For Your Home

The Gaf Elk Timberline is an excellent example of a laminated shingle that fits in expensive neighborhoods alongside products such as tile and slate. While not nearly as expensive, it nonetheless has good looks and is appropriate in a very wide range of neighborhoods. GAF Timberline Colors in the Dallas area.

      • Clay Tile Roofs
Clay tile is a wonderful choice for spanish style homes or Florida type mansions

Clay tiles are long lasting and beautiful. They give a home a marvelous and stately appearance. Clay roofs are generally red in color and eyecatching. One immediately sees their appeal as the tile curves beautifully accent the arched entry ways of the homes they adorn. Some of the major advantages of tile roofs is they are cool with air circulating beneath the tiles, they add value to the homes resale value, they are fire resistant (Class A), and their finishes are generally extremely durable and long lasting without fading.
The disadvantages of tile are cost, weight, and difficulty of maintaining the roof (hard to walk on).

      • Concrete tile roofs
A very nice tile roof in a variety of patterns

Concrete tiles add a beauty and elegance to a home. They come in a much wider range of patterns than clay tiles and even mimic wood shakes.
Though concrete tiles are heavy, they are Class A fire rated, keep your home cool, are insect proof, and did I mention...very good looking.
They are easier to install than clay tile, but the installation process is still spendy. The disadvantages of concrete tiles are in the finish (surface coated colors tend to fade), the seams are fragile (do not walk on seams), and cost.

      • Slate Roofs
Slate looks great on luxury country mansion homes

Slate is the real thing...real stone. It lasts forever or certainly seems to. It has been used in Europe for centuries and original roofs are still in use today. Slate gets its beauty from nature, The colors tend to be dark, but there are also orangish and greenisn hues. The advantages are durability, pedigree, historical accuracy, and a look unlike any other roof product. The real negative is cost of installation and of the material.

These are great shingles that are rugged and durable. They withstand hail storms quite well because of their many layers and heft. They have high definition from their many layers.
