  • Roof Ventilation is Important in Hot Areas like the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Area

Roof Ventilation Options: Turbines, Turtle Vents, Power Fans, and Ridge Vent in Plano, Richardson, Coppell, Garland, and Mesquite, Texas

Roof vent options include turbines, can (turtle) vents, power vents and the popular ridge vent

    Turtle Vents

Turtle vents (aka cans) are the most common style vent seen. Sometimes, you will see row upon row of them. The advantages of turtle vents lie in their simplicity. There are no moving parts to wear out, as they are merely a cap roof over a screen assembly. It is very difficult for wind-driven rain or insects to get through these vents and they are by far the cheapest ventilation choice there is. Summarily, they are simple, reliable, cheap, and relatively unobtrusive (approx 16 inches square).

    Turbines

Turbines use wind to propel them. They can remove a lot of hot air when there is a breeze blowing, making them a popular choice for our customers. They do not require electricity to run like a power fan, and they remove more air than a turtle vent. Use a high quality turbine because the higher quality ball bearing models will still revolve even in very small breezes, unlike the cheap ones that sometimes need a gale wind to budge. In very high winds (over 60 MPH) there is a possibility of wind-driven rain getting through. Turbines have an industrial look and are a mid price venting solution.

    Power Vents

Power vents can remove the most hot air of any vent, depending upon the motor. They can also be very noisy, so beware... with power may come a lot of noise. There are new solar power vents available today that are quieter but do not remove as much hot air, and are reliant upon the sun. Still, they are a viable option in our hot sunny weather here in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area. Power vents tend to be quite large (24-36 inches in diameter) and, if using electric ones (120 v AC), will require an electrician for the installation process.

    Ridge Venting Solution

Ridge vents are probably the best solution for people with adequate amounts of ridge to work with. Ridge vents remove hot air from the very peak of the roof and, with the winds blowing over the peak, create a suction to remove hot air from your attic. They are maintenance free, insect proof, quiet, and good looking. They are one of the most expensive options, costing more than turbines and turtle vents. We find that our customers really love ridge vents. Based upon our happy customers' feedback alone, I'd have to give the nod to ridge vent systems.

    Save Energy

The more hot air that can be removed from your attic in summer, the less your air conditioner has to strain and run, and the less you end up paying to our illustrious electrical suppliers. I don't know about you, but I consider every penny saved to be a penny earned, and the pennies add up fast with electrical bills.

    Be More Comfortable

Removing hot air from your attic makes your home more comfortable. An attic will always be hot in our toasty Dallas summers, but good ventilation will certainly make it more bearable.

    Make Your Roof Last Longer

By keeping attic temperatures lower, you prolong the life of your roof and your sheathing.

    Keep Your Roof Warranty Intact

Inadequate roof ventilation can void your roof warranty. More and more roofing material suppliers are adding ventilation clauses to their warranties. The big print giveth and the small print taketh away.
    .

    Resale Value

I don't know for sure about this one, but I do find more and more savvy customers that are all too well versed in the value of good attic ventilation, having grown up in the area and having owned a house or two.

When is the Best Time to Ventilate Your Roof?

When installing a roof, of course! There is no easier (thus less costly) time to install ventilation than when roofing.

I hope this helps you. I know you are thinking about roof ventilation, or you certainly wouldn't be reading this. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call us - we have been though roofing ventilation certification and can help you with any questions you might have.
