  • How do I decide what shingle to choose?

The choice of shingle is a personal one unless there are restrictive covenants in your area that make the choice for you. Often, storm damage leads to the homeowner asking this question. They don't just wake up and decide to change their roof. Usually, a big hail storm will have struck the Dallas Fort Worth area and now they are deciding what to choose, or perhaps a big storm has revealed leakage. The main concerns I see are:

    • Cost: for many people, this is of overriding importance to them. A three tab shingle will of course be the least expensive way to go, but will not have the curb appeal of a higher grade product.
    • Value: this is where other factors enter the equation. For most people, a shingle like the GAF Timberline will represent the best value with excellent long term wearability and good looks.
    • Color: "I saw a house that really had a great looking color on the roof; can you match it?" When I hear this, it usually means a homeowner saw a designer color roof that caught their eye.
    • Resale value: "I really do not want to spend much as I'm planning to sell soon." Look around at your neighbors' homes. If they have three tab roofs, it certainly will not make sense to put up a designer shingle in the neighborhood, and vice versa.
    • Insurance settlement: The insurance company will pay to restore your home to what it was. They will not pay for shingle upgrades.

Why Worry About Starter Strip, and What Purpose Does It Serve?

      • WeatherPRO Roofing explains the advantage of dedicated roof starter strip in Garland, Mesquite, Plano, Richardson, Dallas, Coppell, TexasQuality does not happen by accident, but many accidents are caused by a lack of quality

        Why even ask the question?

Starter strip is unseen and usually unnoticed until shingles go blowing off your roof, or until water leaks into your home.

      • Starter strip is the first layer of shingle material installed over the underlayment. It is important because it is a determinant in the ability of the roof to withstand wind and prevent the lifting of the most vulnerable shingles, which can cascade into much bigger losses. The decision of which one to use is really one of cost only. It reminds me of the ad for those zip bags and the angry bees. Would you want the bag that clearly showed it could keep the angry bees away if a swarm of them was present? Of course you would. If you knew a big wind storm was coming, would you want the starter strip made to withstand high winds? Of course you would.

      • Often, starter is made from three tab shingles. It is certainly the cheapest way to proceed, and that is its appeal. As for performance... Well, for that, you need the real McCoy. You need to order dedicated starter strip from the factory. It adheres better and is made specifically for the purpose of being a secure starter strip.

      • In order to qualify for the highest wind rating from many manufacturers, the use of real dedicated starter is a requirement. It is usually required along rake edges, also. It just makes sense to use a strong adhesive material made for the purpose of keeping shingles on your roof in the most vulnerable areas.

Here is what I believe. It is expensive to reroof a house. You don't want to do it often. The major costs are labor and materials. Starter strip costs a little more but provides additional peace of mind if the wind comes up, as well as often strengthening your warranty from the manufacturer - read the manufacturer's warranty for full details. There is a reason the manufacturer will give you a higher wind warranty. It is not out of the goodness of their hearts.

I've often said, "Quality does not happen by accident, but many accidents are caused by a lack of quality."
